OHIO TINT LAWS

The percentage of light allowed through your film and glass in Ohio is specific and can vary depending on the window location.

The percent of visible light allowed through your car windows is called VLT: Visible Light Transmission.

Ohio Tint Quick Guide


Front Side Windows: 50% VLT or lighter

Back Side Windows: Any darkness

Rear Window: Any darkness, mirrors required if below 50%

Windshield: Top 5 inches / AS-1 line only

Reflection: No reflectorized materials

Ohio Legal Window Tint Shades

Tint Darkness for Sedans:

Windshield - Tint is allowed on the top portion of the windshield, as long as it does not extend below the AS-1 line or more than 5 inches from the top, whichever is closer to the top. Other windshield tint must allow at least 70% of light in and cannot be red or yellow.


Front Side Windows - Must allow at least 50% of light in and cannot be red or yellow.


Back Side Windows - Any darkness can generally be used.


Rear Window - Any darkness can generally be used, but outside left and right rearview mirrors are required if the rear window is tinted below 50% VLT.

Tint Darkness for SUVs and Vans:

Window tint can reduce glare, heat, and incoming light. Ohio window tint law also has rules about reflective materials, so make sure you pay attention to this as well.

Tint Reflection for Sedans:

Front Side Windows - No reflectorized materials permitted.

Back Side Windows - No reflectorized materials permitted.

Tint Reflection for SUVs and Vans:

Front Side Windows - No reflectorized materials permitted.

Back Side Windows - No reflectorized materials permitted.

Additional Ohio Tint Rules

Ohio does have several other important laws, rules, and regulations pertaining to window tinting.

They include the following:

Side Mirrors - No restrictions in general, but outside left and right rearview mirrors are required if the rear window is tinted below 50% VLT.

Restricted Colors - Red and yellow tint are not permitted on the windshield or front side windows.

Certificates / Labels - Ohio requires sunscreening material to be properly labeled. The label should include the manufacturer’s name and the light transmission percentage.

Medical Exceptions - Ohio does allow medical exemptions with the proper physician or optometrist affidavit kept in the vehicle.

Penalties - Violations may be treated as a misdemeanor. Exact fines and enforcement can vary, so check with local law enforcement or the Ohio BMV for current details.
